Dhayah Fort sits on a hilltop north of Ras Al Khaimah city, the only surviving fort of its kind in the UAE. A zigzag staircase of more than 100 steps leads up. The fort is known for its role in the 1819 campaign, when British troops took it after a short siege. From the top there is a full circle of views over the Hajar Mountains, palm groves and the coast. Entry is free; the building is compact — the climb and the panorama are the point.
Tips
Open Sunday to Thursday, closed at the weekend. Go early morning or near sunset; the climb is hard in the heat. Sturdy shoes and water are essential.
