Dubai with kids: where to go, what to pack, what to skip
Activities by age group, heat advice, and a list of what you'll actually need.
Bottom line
Dubai is one of the most family-friendly cities in the world. AC everywhere, clean restrooms with changing tables, every mall has play zones, taxis take a child seat at no extra cost. Downsides: heat from May to September, and distances — your hotel to a park can be a 40-minute drive.
By age
Under 3
Key words: shade, water, naps. Works well: morning beach (JBR, La Mer, Sunset Beach by Burj Al Arab), hotel kids' pool, an evening stroll on Dubai Marina Walk. Dubai Aquarium inside Dubai Mall is short and striking, no queues.
Skip the desert safari at this age — too bumpy. Burj Khalifa is pointless too — height, noise, no payoff.
3–6
Add: KidZania in Dubai Mall (2–3 hours; kids "work" 60+ professions), VR Park for the older end of this range, full Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. Aquaventure Beach at Atlantis has a toddler zone with small slides.
A dhow dinner cruise plays well — an hour on the Marina, kids stay focused on water and lights.
7–12
The sweet spot for Dubai. Possible: IMG Worlds of Adventure (covered park, 6-hour programme), Motiongate at Dubai Parks, Ski Dubai (sledding and penguins), desert safari with a kid-friendly drive, Burj Khalifa finally lands.
A half-day in Old Dubai with the abra crossing fits this age — they love the "little adventure" framing.
13+
Nearly adult programme: yacht, Burj Khalifa with At.mosphere brunch, water parks, Atlantis, Museum of the Future, Sky Views. The trick is not to overload — teens need slack between activities.
Heat and health
- May–October: no outdoor activity with kids between 11 am and 5 pm. Everything indoors or after sunset.
- November–April: all-day fine, but SPF 50+ is non-negotiable — the sun is stronger than it looks.
- Don't drink tap water; bottled is everywhere.
- If a child is sick, Mediclinic and Aster Clinic are widely available — pediatrician visit AED 300–500, but most home-country prescriptions need a local doctor's note.
Hotel: what to check
With small kids:
- Separate heated kids' pool
- Kids' club with a nanny (4 hours/day free is the standard)
- Microwave in the room (for warming food and bottles) — ask before booking
- Beach within walking distance, not across a road
Atlantis The Royal, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, One&Only Royal Mirage, JA The Resort are reliably family-friendly. Budget picks: Roda Beach Resort, Bahi Ajman Palace.
Pack list
- Compact stroller (big ones don't turn in malls)
- Mosquito spray — mosquitoes do appear in April and October
- Sun hat and shades, even for a 1-year-old
- Fever and stomach meds in the dosage you know — local strengths can differ
- Power adapter for the British plug
Skip first time round
- Don't schedule the desert safari on day one — kids crash after the flight
- Don't take a child under 5 to Global Village — crowds, noise, late
- Don't plan more than one activity per day under age 4
