Ramadan is a special time in Dubai: days are calmer, but evenings after iftar come alive like never before. Tourists are comfortable and intrigued here if they know a couple of rules. It is not an obstacle to a trip but a unique atmosphere. Below, what changes and how to plan.

What changes

By day many cafes are closed or takeaway only, attractions run shorter hours. After sunset everything opens late into the night. Alcohol usually from sunset. Music and loud entertainment are subdued by day. Water parks and beaches operate, but check hours.

Etiquette

Do not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight; in hotels and enclosed tourist restaurants it is fine. Dress more modestly than usual. Be patient, people are fasting. Respect for the tradition is valued here, and locals often respond with special hospitality.

Iftar and suhoor

Iftar, breaking the fast at sunset, is the day's main event: from buffet tents to premium hotel sets. Suhoor, the late-night meal (10pm-3am), in atmospheric lounges and tents. This is the best way to feel Ramadan, book popular spots ahead.

What to see

A perfect time for indoor formats: museums, malls, aquariums, spas. In the evening, walks, markets and iftar tents. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is especially atmospheric. Ramadan fairs and night markets are a treat. Plan outdoor activity for the evening.

Shopping and events

During Ramadan, special sales and night shopping: malls open until 1-2am. There are often Ramadan markets with food, crafts and entertainment. Global Village is usually open. Eid at the month's end brings fireworks, events and peak festive mood.

  • Carry water; you may drink in enclosed areas and your room.
  • Book iftar and suhoor ahead, especially on weekends.
