The short version
Hatta is Dubai's mountain enclave in the Hajar range, about an hour and a half to two hours from the city. It is cooler than the coast, with a turquoise dam for kayaking, bike trails and a zipline. It is a popular day trip, and you can also stay overnight. The best season is October to April, as the mountains are hot in summer. Hatta is part of Dubai, no border is needed, but bring ID.

Tip: arrive when the dam opens, by midday the groups roll in and a queue forms for kayaks. Bring water and a cap, the mountain sun is deceptively strong.
