Dubai souks 2026: Gold, Spice, Textile, Perfume — what to buy and how to bargain

Old Dubai in an hour's walk, the abra crossing, four main souks with real prices and tactics.

18 May 2026·5 min read

The short version

Four main souks in old Dubai on the Deira side (Gold, Spice, Perfume) and Bur Dubai (Textile). Between them: the abra across the Creek for 1 AED. The least "Dubai" side of Dubai — Cairo or Istanbul tempo, not mall tempo. Half a day of walking and haggling, perfect for travellers who've seen Burj Khalifa and want "the real city".

3-4 hour route

Start: Al Ras metro (Green Line), 8 am — still cool, sellers fresh.

  1. Gold Souk (Al Ras) — 1 hour, 380+ gold shops
  2. Spice Souk (Al Ras, 10 min walk) — 30 minutes
  3. Perfume Souk (Al Ras, adjacent) — 30 minutes
  4. Abra across the Creek (Deira Abra Station) — 10 min, 1 AED
  5. Textile Souk (Bur Dubai) — 1 hour
  6. Finish: Al Fahidi Historical District + lunch at Arabian Tea House (45 min)

Total 3.5-4 hours, 50-80 AED per person (abra + lunch).

Gold Souk

The Middle East's main gold market. DMCC data: 600+ shops, 10+ tonnes of gold at any moment.

What people buy:

  • 22-carat jewellery (regional standard)
  • 24-carat biscuits and coins (investment)
  • 18-carat diamond jewellery (more international)

How price builds:

  • Spot price — current gold quote (on the Souk's board)
  • Making charge — for the jeweller's work, 8-25 % on top
  • VAT 5 % — on making charge only, not on the gold weight

Bargaining tactics:

  • Check spot price in the morning ("gold price AED" in Google)
  • Ask the making charge at several shops, not the first
  • Bargain making charge from 25 % → 8-12 %
  • Never pay above 15 % making charge on a simple piece

Tax refund: possible from 250+ AED via Planet kiosk at DXB.

Spice Souk

Compact spice, fragrance, and herb market. 40-50 shops in narrow lanes. The smell is strong.

What to buy:

  • Iranian/Afghan saffron — 35-60 AED per gram (vs 30 in a supermarket). Iranian producers are higher quality.
  • Sweet Sri Lankan cinnamon — 25 AED per 100 g
  • Dried lime (loomi) for machbous — 15-25 AED
  • Damascus rose water — 30-50 AED a small bottle
  • Spice bundle for machbous/mandi in a gift box — 35-80 AED

Tactics:

  • Initial price is inflated by 20-30 %
  • Bargain down to 15-25 % off
  • Buy a bundle (5-7 spices), 15-20 % off
  • Check expiry on the package

Perfume Souk

Next to Spice. Local perfume tradition — oud (agarwood), bukhoor (incense), traditional alcohol-free blends.

What to buy:

  • Local oud perfumes — 80-300 AED per 12 ml. Quality is excellent.
  • Bukhoor (incense chips) — 50-150 AED a pack
  • Custom blend (mixed on the spot) — 80-200 AED
  • Major-brand inspired (Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille reborn) — 50-100 AED

Tactic: don't pay retail. 30-50 % off the opening price is realistic.

Textile Souk (Bur Dubai)

Textile market on the Indian side of the Creek. 200+ shops, silk, cotton, traditional fabric.

What to buy:

  • Indian/Chinese silk — 60-120 AED a metre
  • Pashmina shawls — 80-300 AED, real cashmere from 200
  • Cotton dishdasha for men — 80-200 AED
  • Custom-made suit with on-site measurement — 350-800 AED, ready in 24 hours
  • Wedding-dress alterations — local tailors, 200-600 AED

Tip: tailors inside the Textile Souk sew to measure in 24 hours. Cheaper than Moscow, quality is decent.

Don't buy in the souks

  • iPhones or electronics — almost certainly fake
  • Designer bags — counterfeit
  • Big-brand watches — replicas
  • "Russian blend" anything — tourist trick
  • "100 % cheap saffron" — guaranteed fake

Bargaining etiquette

  • Not aggressive — start with a smile and "How are you?"
  • Don't mention the competitor ("the next shop is cheaper") — you lose respect
  • Don't insult the first price, say "could you give a better price?"
  • Walk away works — 70 % of the time the seller catches you with a better offer
  • Cash earns another 3-5 % off
  • Bundle purchase (several items) earns 10-15 % off

When to go

  • Morning 08:00-12:00 — cooler, sellers politer, no crowds
  • After 17:00 — open till 22-23, more oriental atmosphere
  • Friday before 13:00 — some shops closed for Friday prayer
  • — open after iftar (18:30-01:00), a totally different vibe
  • High-season DSF — prices flex, crowds heavy

What to bring

  • Cash in small notes (abra, bargaining, small purchases)
  • Cards work only in big shops
  • Water bottle (souks have no AC)
  • Closed shoes — narrow streets and dust
  • Smartphone with Google Translate (some sellers Hindi/Urdu only)
Tip: for a gold investment (1 kg bullion), go to the DMCC office (Gold and Diamond Park), not the souk. Cleaner pricing, no making charge, certified bars.

If you'd like a private walking tour with an Arab guide and translation, we run a 3-hour route from 350 AED per person — with story knowledge and bargaining on the spot.
