Abu Dhabi From Dubai in One Day: Itinerary, Highlights and How to Get There
A practical guide to a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi: top sights, the 90-minute drive, the best time to go and a ready-made itinerary.
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, sits just 130 km from Dubai and takes around 90 minutes to reach. It makes an ideal day trip: in one full day you can see a breathtaking mosque, a world-class museum, the presidential palace and the waterfront along the gulf. Below is a practical, no-fluff plan.
How to Get There From Dubai
There are several comfortable options depending on your budget and the level of ease you want.
- Rental car. The most flexible choice. The E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) is a direct, high-quality highway, with a drive time of about 1.5 hours when traffic is light. Keep in mind Salik and Darb toll gates and that parking near attractions may be paid or time-limited.
- Taxi or transfer. Comfortable and hassle-free, with no navigation to worry about. It is best to arrange a one-way trip in advance and confirm the approximate fare with the provider, as rates depend on the vehicle class and waiting time.
- Guided tour or private transfer with a guide. Ideal if you want to see as much as possible without logistics. Gett can tailor the route to your pace, with a comfortable vehicle and an attentive guide.
Tip: leave Dubai early, around 7:30–8:00 a.m., to beat the daytime heat and fit everything in.
What to See in a Day
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The defining symbol of Abu Dhabi and one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the world. Pure white marble, semi-precious stone inlays and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet leave a lasting impression.
- The dress code is strict: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and women need a headscarf. It is wise to bring loose-fitting clothing.
- Entry is generally free for visitors, but Friday hours are limited, so check the schedule in advance.
- Allow 1–1.5 hours. The best light for photos is early morning or sunset.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
A museum on Saadiyat Island known for its signature dome that creates a "rain of light." The collection spans the globe, from ancient artefacts to European masters. Buy tickets online in advance and allow 1.5–2 hours. The museum is usually closed on Mondays, so verify before you go.
Qasr Al Watan
A working presidential palace open to the public. Expect grand halls, a library and exhibits on the heritage and statecraft of the UAE. In the evening there is a light-and-sound show projected on the facade. Around 1.5 hours is enough.
Corniche or Yas Island
End the day to suit your mood.
- The Corniche is an eight-kilometre waterfront promenade along the gulf, with skyline views, beaches and cycling paths. A relaxed choice for a sunset stroll.
- Yas Island is the entertainment hub: Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and the Yas Marina Circuit. Perfect for families, but plan at least 3–4 hours for a single park.
In one day you can realistically combine the mosque, the palace and the waterfront, or the mosque, the Louvre and one Yas park. You cannot do it all, so choose your highlights.
A Ready-Made One-Day Itinerary
- 08:00 — depart Dubai.
- 09:30 — Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
- 11:30 — Louvre Abu Dhabi or Qasr Al Watan.
- 14:00 — lunch near the Corniche or in the Saadiyat area.
- 15:30 — a walk along the Corniche or transfer to Yas Island.
- 18:30–19:00 — head back, arriving in Dubai in time for dinner.
The Best Time to Go
The comfortable season runs from November to March, when daytime temperatures are pleasant for walking. In summer, plan sightseeing for early morning and evening and take shelter in air-conditioned museums at midday. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
Useful Tips
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Confirm opening hours and closing days in advance, as schedules shift around public holidays.
- Buy Louvre and Yas park tickets online: it is cheaper and lets you skip queues.
- Exact prices change, so check current rates before your trip.
