Dubai desert safari 2026: which one to pick, prices, what to bring
Group, private, overnight — the formats compared, and who each one fits.
The short version
A desert safari is one of Dubai's two mandatory activities (the other is Burj Khalifa). Lahbab dunes or Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, dune-bashing in an SUV, camels, sunset over the dunes, dinner at a Bedouin camp. Per-person price runs from 180 AED (group) to 4 000+ AED (private overnight).
Where safaris go
Two areas:
- Lahbab Desert — closest to Dubai (40-minute drive), red dunes, where all group tours run. A bit "touristed out" in places.
- Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) — restricted reserve, accredited operators only. Quiet, wild gazelles and oryx, gentler dunes.
- Al Marmoom Desert Reserve — closest to the city, hosts Bab Al Shams resort.
Group tours all go to Lahbab by default; private tours let you pick the area.
Formats
Group safari (180-260 AED per person)
- Hotel pickup 14:30-15:30.
- 30-40 min dune-bashing in a Land Cruiser or Patrol.
- Sunset stop, photos, camel, mandatory but boring sandboard.
- Camp 17:30-21:00: BBQ "Arabic brunch", tannoura, belly dance, falconry.
- Drop-off by 22:00.
- Downsides: 30-40 people in one camp, scheduled dinner, no privacy.
Private SUV (1 200-2 200 AED per vehicle up to 6 people)
- Same programme, your own vehicle and driver-guide.
- DDCR option (wilder).
- Flexible timing — you can start at 12:00 and add a camel trek.
- For families with kids or couples, a different league.
Premium private (2 800-4 500 AED)
- DDCR reserve, private camp, sunset champagne, dinner for 4-6.
- Bedouin-style service, guide in kandura.
- For honeymoons or special occasions.
Overnight (1 800-3 500 AED per person)
- Day safari plus night in a tented camp with a real bed and shower.
- Sunset, BBQ, fire, sunrise breakfast in the desert.
- High season only (October-March).
What to bring
- Closed shoes with grip, dunes are hot even in December
- Water bottle, light jacket for after sunset (+15 °C)
- Sunglasses, the sand is real
- A scarf for dune-bashing
- Phone or camera with dust protection
- Don't overeat before the drive, dune-bashing is rough
Common group-tour issues
- Cheap operators use old Pajeros with no seatbelts
- Quad-bike add-ons often skip helmets and briefing
- Peak-season camps get overcrowded, queue for everything
- BBQ is functional, not for gourmets
If it's your first Dubai trip, book private SUV not group. The comfort gap is wider than the price gap per person.
When to go
November-March, ideal. April and October hot but workable. Summer (May-September): morning departures at 5 am only, dinner on a closed AC terrace, midday dune-bashing isn't realistic.
We run private safaris in DDCR with a premium camp, format for couples or families from 2 800 AED. Drop us a message to book or compare formats.
