Jebel Jais: the UAE's Highest Mountain, Zipline and Drive
A practical guide to Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah: the world's longest zipline, viewpoints, via ferrata and trails, how to get there from Dubai and when to go.
In short
Jebel Jais is the UAE's highest mountain, roughly 1,900 metres above sea level, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, a little over an hour from Dubai's northern edge. People come for three things: the cool air the coast never offers, dramatic views over the Hajar range, and the activities, led by the longest zipline in the world. The drive up, a smooth switchback road with dozens of bends, is an attraction in itself.
Why go
The summit is noticeably cooler than Dubai, usually 8 to 12 degrees lower, which is why Jais stays popular even in summer when the coast is too hot to walk. It suits active travellers and anyone who just wants to sit with a coffee above the clouds.
- The world's longest zipline, around 2.8 kilometres, reaching 120 to 150 km/h face down
- Viewpoints and an amphitheatre overlooking peaks and valleys
- A via ferrata route with a safety cable and suspension bridges
- Hiking trails of varied difficulty, from easy loops to real climbs
- Cafes and rest areas close to the summit
Zipline and via ferrata
The star of Jais is its record-breaking zipline. You fly face down, superman-style, over a gorge, then switch to a shorter second line to the landing platform. There are weight and height limits, so check the requirements in advance, especially if you are travelling with teenagers.
Via ferrata is a route along sheer rock faces using a steel cable, fixed rungs and suspension bridges. You go with a guide in a helmet and harness; no special training is needed, but basic fitness helps.
Book both ahead, particularly on weekends and during the cool season, when slots fill fast.
Viewpoints, the drive and trails
The road to the top is a wide switchback with well-placed pull-ins. From the official viewpoints partway up and higher, you look out over the layered Hajar rock. Sunset is especially good here, with warm light banding across the ridges.
Marked trails range from short scenic loops to longer routes. Carry plenty of water; there is almost no shade, and the dry mountain air is deceptive, you do not feel thirsty until late.
The summit cafe
Near the highest point there is a cafe area with viewing terraces. It makes a handy finishing stop: grab a coffee, eat something light and wait out the hottest or windiest hours. The menu is simple, so expect light bites and drinks rather than a full restaurant.
How to get there from Dubai
The easiest option is to drive. The route runs through Ras Al Khaimah and then follows the Jebel Jais signs. From central Dubai it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours each way, depending on your start point and traffic.
- By private or rental car: the road is excellent, the final stretch is a mountain switchback, so take it calmly
- By transfer or on an organised tour: convenient if you would rather not drive
- There is no public transport to the summit, so plan on a car
Fill up before you leave; there are no petrol stations on the mountain. Navigation to the Jebel Jais pin is reliable.
When to go
The best season is October to April, comfortable by day and cool in the evening. In summer the altitude keeps the top bearable, but it is still hot at midday, so aim for an early-morning or near-sunset visit.
- October to April: ideal, fine for daytime walks
- May to September: better early morning or evening, the midday sun is harsh
- On winter evenings the summit can be genuinely cold and windy, so bring warm layers
Set off early to catch the views before the midday haze and to get back in daylight, as the switchback is slower in the dark.
What to pack
- A warm layer, a windbreaker or fleece, the top is cooler and windier than below
- Comfortable closed shoes for the trails and via ferrata
- Plenty of water and a snack, especially if you plan to hike
- Sun protection: cream, sunglasses, a hat
- A charger or power bank, the views demand a lot of photos
- Some cash just in case, though cards are usually accepted
