In short

Dubai is built for the camera: a futuristic skyline, the contrast of old and new, dunes and sea. The key is catching the light (golden and blue hour) and knowing the rules, especially for drones. Below, spots by shot type and practicalities.

Skyline and heights

Dubai Frame and Sky Views, the frame and a glass bridge over Downtown. The View at the Palm, the best angle on Atlantis and the Palm. Ain Dubai, a wheel with Marina panoramas. Observation Deck at 300, the view of Burj Al Arab. For the classic Burj Khalifa shot, the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge or the fountain from below.

Old town and desert

Al Fahidi (Bastakiya), wind towers, sand walls, textures and shadows, best in the morning. The souk and abra on Dubai Creek for street shots. The desert, dunes at sunset (Big Red, Margham), long shadows and warm light. La Mer and JBR, colourful walls and murals for lifestyle.

Golden and blue hour

Golden hour (30-40 minutes before sunset), warm light on glass and dunes. Blue hour (15-25 minutes after sunset), the sky is not black yet but building lights are on, ideal for the skyline and fountain. Sunrise, an empty city and soft light, especially for beaches and desert.

Drones, the rules

In the UAE drones are strictly regulated: GCAA registration and a permit are required, with bans near airports and over crowds. Without a permit, fines and confiscation. Many top spots are no-fly zones. Do not risk it: for aerials, a legal helicopter or seaplane tour is easier.

Practical

  • Tripods are banned or permit-only in most malls and observation decks.
  • Heat harms gear, do not leave a camera in the sun.
  • Do not photograph people, especially local women, without consent, it is both law and etiquette.
  • Best outdoor time, before 10am and after 5pm.
  • Bring an ND filter for daytime long exposures at the fountain.
