Dubai layover 2026: what to fit into 4, 8, or 12 hours
If your DXB or DWC connection sits between Moscow and Bangkok or the Maldives, here are short-visit scenarios.
The short version
DXB is the world's fourth-busiest airport — Emirates and flydubai feed Asia, Africa, the Pacific through it. With a 4-12 hour stop you can fit in Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. From 8 hours, add Marina or Old Dubai. The pivot is the visa.
Visa for the stopover
Russian, Belarusian, Kazakh, Ukrainian citizens (plus ~60 countries) get visa-on-arrival at DXB free of charge, stamped in the passport for 30/60/90 days. No paperwork needed, just a return ticket on file. Border control takes 5-15 minutes (queues at peak arrival times).
Other CIS citizens without visa: check the IATA list, or apply for an e-visa through the Emirates pre-trip portal (130 AED, valid 14 days before flight).
4-hour layover
With a 4-hour connection minus passport control, you get 1.5-2 hours in the city. Not much for a real programme.
- Stay airside — DXB itself is entertainment: Zen zone, gold ATM, in T3, restaurants and Duty Free across 64 000 m²
- Pop out for 90 min to Dubai Festival City (15 min taxi), quick shopping plus Garden Buffet
- Take DXB Metro to Burj Khalifa, see the fountain from outside, skip At The Top
8-hour layover
4-5 hours of city time.
- "Classic": taxi from DXB → Dubai Mall (1h), Burj Khalifa At The Top (1h with queue), Dubai Fountain (15 min), taxi back. ~3.5h. No proper lunch.
- "Sea and sky": taxi to Dubai Marina, walk JBR (1h), lunch at Pier 7 (1h), taxi back. ~3h.
- "Old town": taxi to Bur Dubai, abra across the Creek to Deira souks (Gold, Spice), 2-3h.
12+ hour layover
A full working day. Two big plus food and a slower pace.
- Burj Khalifa + Dubai Mall + lunch + Marina at sunset
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in (1.5h each way) + dinner back in Marina
- Evening desert safari (pickup from DXB after landing, via an agency)
Logistics
- DXB Terminal 1/3, closer to the city — taxi to Downtown 60-80 AED (20-25 min no traffic).
- DXB Terminal 2, further out — taxi to Downtown 90-120 AED.
- DWC (Al Maktoum, in Jebel Ali) — far from Downtown (45-60 min), taxi 120-180 AED. Most international flights still go to DXB.
- Red Line metro from DXB Terminal 3 to Burj Khalifa: 25 min, 7.5 AED. The cheapest option.
- Left luggage at DXB: ~50 AED per bag for 6 hours.
What to bring
- Lighter change of clothes (Moscow-Dubai is a different climate, even in winter)
- Hoodie for the airport (AC is brutal)
- Charged phone with two SIMs — Du/Etisalat eSIM installs in 5 minutes
- UK Type G adapter (laptop charging)
Tip
If you have 12+ hours flying to Asia (Bangkok, Maldives, Singapore) on Emirates, look at their stopover package. Voucher for a 4-5 hotel night with , from 500 AED for a 4 without breakfast. Turns a 14-hour transit into a real mini-break.
Tip: 6-9 hour stopover and want Burj Khalifa? Book At The Top 5-7 days ahead. Walk-up slots disappear 1-2 hours out in high season.
