Ski Dubai: The Indoor Ski Resort at Mall of the Emirates
Real snow in the desert, penguins, slopes and a snow park under one roof. A practical guide to Ski Dubai: what to bring, how long to plan and tips for kids.
In short
Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort inside the Mall of the Emirates, right in the heart of the city. It stays at around minus 4 degrees all year, with real snow, working lifts and a colony of penguins. After plus 40 outside in summer, stepping into the cold feels like an attraction in itself. It suits families with small children as much as people who simply want to snowboard without leaving the UAE.
What is inside
The resort splits into two main zones, usually sold as separate tickets.
- Ski Slope, five runs of varying difficulty, including the world's longest indoor run, plus lifts. This is for actual skiing and snowboarding.
- Snow Park, a play area with snow slides, tubing, a zip line over the snow, snowball zones and a toddler section. No skiing skills needed here, it is all about playing in the snow.
The penguins are their own highlight. The resort is home to king and gentoo penguins, with scheduled appearances where they are walked out to guests and closer encounter sessions for photos. Penguin times are limited, so check them in advance.
Tickets: rough guide
Always confirm current prices and opening hours on the official Ski Dubai website before your visit, as they change with the season. For general planning:
- Snow Park, an entry package from roughly AED 200 per person, usually including winter clothing and most activities.
- Ski Slope, slope and lift access from roughly AED 250, most often including basic gear and clothing rental.
- Penguin encounter, a separate add-on from roughly AED 200.
Children under a certain age often pay less, and family or combo packages work out better than buying each item separately. Booking online ahead of time is smart, as queues build up on weekends and school holidays.
What is included and what to bring
The good news is you do not need your own gear. Tickets usually already include:
- a winter jacket and warm trousers,
- boots, and skis or a snowboard on the slope,
- a helmet for skiing.
Worth bringing yourself:
- warm socks, tall, ideally wool, as these are not provided,
- gloves, sold on site, but your own are more comfortable,
- a beanie or buff for under the hood,
- a spare T-shirt for after active skiing.
Mittens, hats and socks are sold near the entrance if you forget anything. Footwear for the snow park is provided, but standing in it for long gets cold, so socks make a real difference.
With kids
Ski Dubai is genuinely family friendly. The snow park has a soft Snow School zone and slides for the youngest, and tubing works for children from around age 3 with an adult. The slope has a ski school with instructors, including lessons for kids.
Practical tips with children:
- Allow time to adjust, the cold hits hard after outdoor heat.
- Add an extra warm layer under the rental jacket for little ones.
- Plan a hot-drink break, there is a cafe overlooking the slope.
- Do not overload the day, an hour to ninety minutes of active snow is usually enough for kids.
How much time to plan
- Snow Park with kids, 1.5 to 2 hours is comfortable for everything.
- Skiing the slope, from 2 hours, and a day pass is better if you want real time on the runs.
- Penguins, add 30 to 45 minutes to your main plan.
On average, Ski Dubai takes half a day with travel and changing. It pairs naturally with the Mall of the Emirates itself, one of the city's large malls with restaurants and a cinema, so warming up over lunch afterwards is easy.
Getting there and when to go
The Mall of the Emirates sits right on the red metro line, with a station of the same name and a covered walkway into the mall. By taxi or Careem from downtown it is roughly 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic, and mall parking is free.
The best time to visit is a weekday morning or close to opening, with shorter rental queues and a quieter slope. Weekends and school holidays get busy, especially in the snow park.
Ski Dubai fits neatly into a winter trip, when the weather outside is pleasant but you want something unexpected. If you are planning a fuller emirates itinerary, look at family tours or Abu Dhabi excursions, which slot together well. And for a sea-and-snow contrast, a sunset yacht rental is a lovely follow-up.
Just do not forget warm socks and a charged phone: you will want to keep the shots of snow in the middle of the desert.
