Things to Do in Abu Dhabi 2026: Top Sights and Route
Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, the Louvre, the Corniche, Yas Island and Emirates Palace. How to get there from Dubai and how much time to plan.
In short
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, has a different rhythm than Dubai: more culture, more space, quieter luxury. You can cover the main sights in one busy day, or spread them over two for a slower pace. The classic set: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the presidential palace Qasr Al Watan, Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Corniche waterfront, the Yas Island entertainment hub and the iconic Emirates Palace hotel. Abu Dhabi is roughly 90 minutes from Dubai, so it works equally well as a standalone trip or a day trip.
The main sights
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The emirate's signature landmark and one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. White marble, semi-precious stone inlay, a huge hand-knotted carpet and crystal chandeliers. Entry for tourists is free, but the dress code is strict: shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women. Abayas are usually available on site. Come in the morning, before the heat and the crowds. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours.
Qasr Al Watan
A working presidential palace open to visitors. It is not a museum of antiquities but a showcase of modern Arabic architecture: a vast dome, a library, ceremonial halls and installations. There is an evening light show on the facade. Book tickets online in advance, and check current prices and hours on the official website. Plan about 2 hours.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
The sister museum to the Paris Louvre under its famous latticed dome, which lets through a "rain of light". The collection spans antiquity to contemporary art. A good choice in the heat or after lunch when you want air conditioning. Plan around 2 hours, more if you love art. Ticket prices are mid-range; check the museum site for the exact figure.
The Corniche
A long seafront promenade with beaches, cycle paths and skyline views. It is free and lovely for a sunset walk, with clean city beaches where you can swim. A nice contrast after the museums and the mosque.
Yas Island
The entertainment island and the best pick for families with kids. Home to Ferrari World with some of the fastest roller coasters in the world, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World and the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit. Plan half a day per park, or a full day for a proper outing. With children, it is easier to give Yas Island its own day.
Emirates Palace
The grand hotel that became a symbol of Abu Dhabi luxury: gold, marble, palms and a private beach. Even if you are not staying, you can stop for the famous gold-flaked coffee or afternoon tea. A photogenic spot for a few memorable shots.
How to get there from Dubai
- On an organised tour. The simplest option: transfer, guide and a planned route. We arrange Abu Dhabi tours departing from Dubai.
- By car. About 90 minutes on the E11 highway. Great if you want your own pace. Factor in Salik tolls and parking.
- By bus. Regular intercity services, budget-friendly but less flexible on timing.
- By taxi or private transfer. Pricier, but door to door with no changes.
How much time to plan
- One day from Dubai. You can realistically fit the mosque, Qasr Al Watan, the Louvre and the Corniche at sunset. Leave early in the morning.
- Two days. Add Yas Island and unhurried walks, staying overnight in Abu Dhabi.
- With kids. It makes sense to split: one day for culture, one day for the Yas Island parks.
Practical tips
- Start the day at the mosque: cooler and less crowded in the morning.
- Bring a scarf and covered clothing so you are not dependent on rentals.
- Buy Qasr Al Watan and Louvre tickets online in advance.
- During the hottest hours plan museums and malls, and save walks for the evening.
- Prices and opening hours change, so always confirm on each venue's official website.
Abu Dhabi pairs nicely with time on the water: after a day of culture it is a treat to head out into the gulf. To add the sea to your route, take a look at yacht rentals. And to decide how the capital differs from its neighbour, see our Dubai vs Abu Dhabi comparison.
