Northern Emirates in a Weekend: A Road Trip from Dubai Through Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah
A ready two-day route across the five northern emirates of the UAE, with distances, drive times and tips on what to pick for mountains, beaches, culture or nature.
Why head north
Everyone knows Dubai and Abu Dhabi, yet the five northern emirates remain quietly underrated. This is where the calmer, more authentic side of the UAE survives: old souks, fishing lagoons, mountain switchbacks and empty beaches on the Gulf of Oman. In a single weekend you can realistically see all five if you build a loop instead of returning to Dubai each time.
The core idea: drive north along the west coast through Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, climb into Ras Al Khaimah, then cross the Hajar Mountains to Fujairah on the east coast. That keeps the road moving in one direction, with no backtracking.
Distances and drive times
Approximate figures from central Dubai (traffic aside):
- Sharjah, about 30 km, 30 minutes.
- Ajman, about 45 km, 40 minutes.
- Umm Al Quwain, about 60 km, 50 minutes.
- Ras Al Khaimah, about 110 km, 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Fujairah, about 130 km, 1 hour 45 minutes (via the mountain pass).
The best window is from October to April, when the heat eases and mountain trails are comfortable. A rental car or a private driver works best, as public transport between emirates is limited.
Day one: Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain
Sharjah is the cultural capital of the UAE. Start in the Heart of Sharjah, a restored old town of clay walls, and step into the Museum of Islamic Civilization. For a walk by the water, the Al Qasba lagoon in the city centre is an easy add.
Next is Ajman, the most compact emirate. It offers a pleasant Corniche, a calm city beach and the small but rewarding Ajman Museum inside an old fort. A good place to pause for lunch over the lagoon.
By evening, move on to Umm Al Quwain, the quietest emirate. Its old town with a fort, fish markets and a mangrove lagoon you can paddle by kayak. This is the place to see the UAE without the crowds.
Day two: Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah
In the morning, head to Ras Al Khaimah, the emirate of mountains and adventure. The headline is Jebel Jais, the highest point in the country. A switchback road leads to viewpoints, a restaurant at altitude and the world's longest zipline. Down below, the historic Dhayah Fort and old markets are worth a stop.
Then take the pass through the Hajar Mountains to Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman. This is the emirate of beaches, diving and the ancient Al Bidyah Mosque, one of the oldest in the country. The water on the east coast is clearer and calmer than the Gulf, ideal for snorkelling around Snoopy Island. On the way back toward Dubai you can stop in the Kalba exclave on Sharjah's east coast to visit the Khor Kalba mangrove reserve, the oldest in the UAE, home to the rare collared kingfisher.
What to pick by interest
- Mountains and adrenaline, Ras Al Khaimah, Jebel Jais, zipline and via ferrata.
- Beaches and sea, Fujairah, east coast, diving and snorkelling.
- Culture and history, Sharjah, museums, old town, Islamic heritage.
- Nature and quiet, the Khor Kalba mangroves and the Umm Al Quwain lagoon, kayaks and birds.
- An easy stroll, Ajman, the Corniche and a city beach in half a day.
Practical tips
- Fill up in advance, petrol stations are sparser on mountain stretches.
- Pack a light jacket, the Jebel Jais summit is noticeably cooler.
- Sharjah has a stricter dress code and is alcohol-free, plan accordingly.
- Book the zipline and altitude restaurants ahead, spots are limited.
- Set off early so you cross the mountain pass in daylight.
